Donated by the owners of the old La Scala restaurant, the trophy was unearthed recently at the back of Technical's dusty silverware cabinet, and has not been played for since 1971.
For today's administrators, the trophy is a kind of time capsule, generating many memories from that era. Masters players Lloyd Napper, Mike Lucas and Roger Dunn played in '71 in a South Island under-12 team in Christchurch.
The 1971 New Zealand player of the year was Derek Daniels, and his Dunedin Suburbs national league side then included keeper Neil Mackenzie, Bill Fleming and Robby Neilson.
Perhaps some players from that era will turn up at the Caledonian today to compare the quality of play between now and then, when Suburbs finished its debut national league season in sixth place and even beat eventual winner Eastern Suburbs.
However, the FPL game will be foremost in both teams' minds, as Technical coach Mike Fridge aims to keep his side at least level in the competition with leader Caversham, which played the Spirit in Invercargill last night.
Fourth placed Roslyn-Wakari should test Technical, although the young side coached by Jim Vaughan and Andy Duncan is still aiming for stability after losing players from last year.
Technical will be without Andy Coburn, who travels north this weekend to play for the NZFC All Stars team against the All Whites A team. Interestingly, Coburn has been named among the forwards instead of his usual midfield position.
Until last week, Roslyn had had problems in scoring, but a 4-0 result over Green Island encouraged the coaching staff.
However, after battling in the white-hot crucible against Caversham to grab a well earned 2-2 draw last week, Technical should be too strong for Roslyn at this stage.
Third-placed Mosgiel plays University at Memorial Park. The equation will be student energy versus Mosgiel's better-balanced side.
Grants Braes visits the Gardens ground to play Northern, which suffered a heavy 4-1 loss to the Plainsmen last week. In contrast, Braes had a spectacular 5-3 win over Invercargill's Spirit.
Struggling Green Island will need to improve greatly to take anything from Queenstown at Sunnyvale, but home advantage could be important against the Central Otago side, which does not travel well.
