Headed goals made the difference at Tonga Park on Saturday when Dunedin Technical beat Caversham 3-1 in a Footballsouth Premier League match.

Aaron Burgess bulleted one fine header in, but the effort from Andy Coburn was a Superman horizontal dive that gave keeper Callum Flaws absolutely no chance.

Caversham drew first blood after Hamish Chang was given space to drive in a shot in the 35th minute that deceived Technical keeper Michael Walker.

The ball skidded just in front of Walker on a poor quality pitch that would have been much worse if the Caversham players themselves had not attempted to mow the long grass on Friday.

The thick, wet grass affected both sides' play, and reduced tactics to long passing that was sensible, but hardly conducive to the quality build-up play that both sides normally generate.

Caversham's goal-scoring celebrations had hardly finished before Technical struck back with a dazzling equaliser from Justin Flaws as he cut in from the right and laced in a low shot.

The Flaws brothers, Justin and Mike, were the aces in Technical's pack, and Justin delivered a string of superb crosses from the right wing that might have doubled the score.

Caversham became stronger as the match progressed, with Darren Overton initiating attacks, and centreback Tom Schwarz looking dangerous at corners and free kicks, but generally, it was a flat performance from coach Richard Murray's side.

Technical was composed at the back, Tim Myers showing the error-free game that earned him international caps at under-17 and under-20 levels. He has also played for Waitakere in the O League.

Technical coach Mike Fridge rated his team's performance as the best yet in his tenure at the club, and singled out Mike Flaws for a top performance in midfield.

Caversham's Murray felt his side had chances to score more, but they just would not go in, he said.

Roslyn-Wakari romped into second place in the FPL fifth round with a 5-0 drubbing of Grants Braes. James Govan scored for the second week running, new signing Mike Still opened his account and the other goals came from Aajay Cunningham, Sam Mepham and Fraser Cameron.

Mosgiel beat University 2-0 at Memorial Park, to draw level with Caversham in fourth place.

Veterans Mike McGarry and Phil Kelly scored for the Plainsmen.

Queenstown Rovers moved to fifth in the FPL after a 2-2 draw with Spirit FC in Invercargill.

Rovers has made an amazing recovery after losing 11-0 in its first game.

Green Island earned its first point after a Tom Belain goal created a 1-1 draw with Northern, whose goal was scored by Simon Wilkes.
