Football: Attacking sides meet in key clash

Two sharpshooting attacks clash today at the Caledonian Ground where Caversham and Roslyn-Wakari play a key Footballsouth Premier League fixture.

They notched 12 goals between them in Chatham Cup ties last week as Caversham slammed seven past Christchurch Western, and Roslyn hit five goals past University.

Caversham possibly had the harder task in overcoming the Christchurch side and, apart from top finishing in front of goal, coach Richard Murray's team squeezed Western dry with a high-energy game.

Hamish Chang in midfield burned energy, and his partners, Patrick Fleming, Seamus Ryder, Harley Rodeka and the classy Darren Overton, dominated play.

Tom Schwarz was a steady anchorman in defence, never missed a header and lurked dangerously in attack, shoulder to shoulder with the rangy Simon Ward.

Last time out, it was a thrilling 1-1 draw, with Overton scoring after five minutes, and James Govan equalising for Roslyn.

Roslyn is capable of an upset, having already beaten FPL leader Dunedin Technical 2-1, with goals by Fraser Cameron and Brad Johnstone.

Mike Cunningham has been Roslyn's fulcrum in midfield, but younger brother Aajay is not far behind and, after an absence last week due to University exams, he will be bursting to compete.

Also a high-energy competitor, Sam Mepham leads the charge with the pacy Cameron and deep runs from Tom Connor and Sam Green, while Tim Mather and James Watson have forged a strong partnership in defence.

At Memorial Park, Mosgiel plays Technical and it should be another thriller as the Plainsmen try to reel in the FPL leader, which is five points ahead.

Last week, Technical missed the cutting edge of FPL top-scorer Aaron Burgess, but the striker will have a spring in his step since he and wife Maggie had their first child recently.

Mosgiel could have Reagan Coldicott back in attack after ankle ligament problems, and defensively coach Mike McGarry will be mindful Technical ruined his side's goals-against record with a 6-2 drubbing in April.

Grants Braes may have turned the corner after smashing five goals past Green Island last week. But Northern will provide stiffer resistance, and has pace in attack that might unhinge Allan Laidler's team at Ocean Grove.

Green Island has another uphill struggle in playing Queenstown at Sunnyvale, and the University side travels to Invercargill to play Spirit FC, yet might find the artificial turf to its liking.
