The scholarship is for $5000 and is to be put towards a playing stint overseas.

Otago Cricket Association patron Nick Smith has, in his words, "stumped up some dough to help with expenses for the trip".

"I have always advocated that any young cricketer with potential who aspires to get to the highest level should have time playing cricket in England," Smith wrote in an email to the Otago Daily Times.

Recipients of the scholarship need to commit to Otago cricket for a minimum of two seasons upon return from their overseas stint.

Lockrose (22) is a promising left arm spinner who has represented New Zealand at age group level and has had a handful of opportunities for Otago.

Anaru Kitchen and Michael Rippon had the spinning slots locked down, but Kitchen’s retirement this season has opened the door for Lockrose.

A playing stint overseas should get him in good shape to make a push for more opportunities at domestic level next summer.

James (23) is an established member of the Sparks squad. The right-hander has played 92 games for Otago since her debut as a 15-year-old in December 2014.
