Hawke Cup zone win for South Canterbury

South Canterbury has secured another Hawke Cup challenge.

They wrapped up Hawke Cup zone four qualifiers after finishing top of the table with four wins for the season.

They had an outright and first innings win against Mid Canterbury in Ashburton at the weekend.

Mid Canterbury were sent in to bat first and were all out for 134 runs.

Shaun Rooney and Ben Armstrong picked up three wickets each and Sam Carlaw and Hamish Caird picked up two each.

South Canterbury opener Adam Beck made a rapid start with 52 runs and Flynn Brookland added 47 runs.

South Canterbury were all out for 187 runs. Tom Johnston picked up three for 44 for Mid Canterbury.

In the second innings, Mid Canterbury opener Des Kruger made a better start with a 63 runs. But South Canterbury ripped through the lower order and Mid Canterbury were all out for 107.

Matthew Brown picked up a five-wicket bag with an incredible five for 13 from his six overs.

South Canterbury were 56 in reply when the game was called off.

In Alexandra, Otago Country had a first innings win against Southland to finish second on the table. Southland elected to bat first and were all out for 227 runs at Molyneux Park.

Opener Sam Downing made a strong start and added 48 runs before he was trapped for an LBW by Sukhdev Singh Sandhu.

Nick Brown top scored with 64 runs and Ashton Hansen added 30 runs on debut.

Singh Sandhu finished with figures of four for 53 from his 22 overs and Matthew West picked up two for 33.

In reply, Otago Country were all out for 245. Thomas O'Connor top scored with 89 runs.

Southland strike bowler Sithum Niluminda took yet another five-wicket bag.

He finished with five for 82 and Liam McFaul, Sam Downing, and Ben McCall each took one wicket.

Southland ended up 19 for one in the second innings before the game was called off.
