Cricket: Vettori falls one run short

Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori fell agonisingly short of a test century on the second day of the first cricket test against Pakistan at the University Oval.

New Zealand were 404 for eight in their first innings at stumps. Bad light stopped play shortly after a resumption following a more than three hour rain delay.

Resuming on 276 for six, New Zealand lost Brendon McCullum, 78, and captain Vettori for 99 -- two balls before play was curtailed.

Umar Gul was the successful bowler today and ended with two for 115 from 34 overs.

Shane Bond was not out on eight and Iain O'Brien, two, when play ended. The third day will start at 11.30am tomorrow -- 30 minutes earlier in a bid to make up some of the time lost.

Players retreated to the pavilion early in the middle session with New Zealand on 381 for seven. Vettori was on 87 and Shane Bond was not out three.

New Zealand were 375 for seven at lunch.

Resuming their first innings on 276 for six, New Zealand earlier lost the wicket of McCullum to the last ball of the opening session when he was yorked by Gul for 78, ending a 168-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Vettori.
