Otago batsman Greg Todd knows his side will be one of the underdogs at the Champions League.

But from his perspective, the Volts expect to do well and go into the Indian twenty/20 tournament full of confidence.

And why not? Otago dominated the New Zealand domestic twenty/20 competition and has a good core of international players who are highly capable of shining on the world stage.

Brendon McCullum's explosive ability with the bat is well known and Dimitri Mascarenhas' liking for hitting the ball over the rope should strike fear into the opposition.

Nathan McCullum, Neil Broom and Ian Butler have established themselves in the Black Caps' limited overs squad this year, and Craig Cumming and Aaron Redmond have both opened the batting for the test side.

Then there are players such as Todd: not as well known but equally confident and determined to succeed.

"Everyone is pretty excited and we are expecting big things over there," Todd said, fresh from a session with a bowling machine which hurled down yorker after yorker at a lively pace.

"We're not just going there to compete; we are going there to win. I think there is a feeling in the team that we can definitely knock over a couple of big sides.

"There is some good opposition but we've got guys who have played for New Zealand, so we're not the weakest side there. We've got a bit to prove and are probably the underdog from everyone else's point of view. But we've got other ideas."

The gritty left-hander is instinctively more defensively minded and more suited to first-class cricket.

His patience and ability to occupy the crease for long periods have helped him play some important innings for Otago.

But twenty/20 demands you throw caution, and sometimes technique, to the wind and go after the bowling.

While it does not come naturally, Todd has been working hard on his attacking game.

"I've changed a few things with my batting and it's starting to become more my game now. I feel like I'm hitting the ball all right."

While Todd has been refining his game in the nets,
