Sheed's knock of 127 helped Green Island defeat Taieri by 56 runs in the opening round of the Dunedin senior one-day tournament.
In a low-scoring fixture, Kaikorai limped past Carisbrook-Dunedin's meagre total of 106.
Albion batted magnificently to chase down Pelichet Bay's total of 266, and Craig Smith's innings of 94 helped University-Grange dispatch North East Valley by 63 runs.
Green Island 253/8 beat Taieri 197 at Sunnyvale
Green Island skipper and former Otago batsman Jordan Sheed made the perfect beginning to the summer with a classy century.
Sheed whacked 127, helping his side score 253 for eight.
He was eventually undone when he offered a catch off the bowling of Ryan Dowling.
Jamie Munro chipped in with 44.
Reuben Simpson bowled well for Taieri, taking three for 33 from his allotment of 10 overs.
Jarrad Waldron (48) and Ant Harris (31) combined in an opening stand of 84 for Taieri, and Dwayne Weir scored 39.
But the middle order and tail fell away as Taieri collapsed from 147 for three to be all out for 197, giving the defending champion a 56-run win.
Jeremy Scott was the pick of the Green Island bowlers, with four for 33 from 10 overs.
Pelichet Bay 266 lost to Albion 267/6 at Culling Park
Albion denied Pelichet Bay victory with a superb team batting display, overhauling a competitive total of 266 with four wickets and more than four overs in hand.
Leighton Morgan (69) and George Spittle (74) set a solid platform for Pelichet Bay with an opening stand of 93.
David Goddard continued the good work with an innings of 56.
At the halfway point the total of 266 looked competitive but Albion ran the target down with relative ease, with half centuries from Jamie Glenn, Scott Haines and Nick Cape.
Cape joined Haines at the wicket with Albion 186 for six and the pair guided their team past the target.
James Fuller took two for 44 for Pelichet Bay.
Carisbrook-Dunedin 106 lost to Kaikorai 107/8 at the Oval
Kaikorai stumbled to a two-wicket win over Carisbrook-Dunedin in a low-scoring match.
Having dismissed Carisbrook-Dunedin for a paltry 106, it struggled to reach the modest target.
Daniel Duke top-scored with 24 and Will Deerness added 21 to help overhaul the total despite the best efforts of strike bowler Paul Hoffman, who took five for 35 from 10 overs.
Earlier, Craig Sneddon laid the platform for the victory with a tidy spell.
He took three for 18 from six overs and picked up the key wicket of Sean Eathorne for 29.
Charlie Hendry also bowled well.
In a brief spell he took two for 10.
University Grange 275/9 beat North East Valley 212 at the Oval
Otago left arm bowler Craig Smith made a brilliant start to the season but with bat, rather than the ball.
Smith shredded the North East Valley attack, top-scoring with 94 runs.
But in sight of 100 he was bowled by Dave Cockcroft.
By then, though, University had built an imposing total and went on to reach 275 for nine.
Earlier, Michael Bracewell scored 51 and combined in an opening stand of 61 with Mark Collie (38).
Valley's reply got off to a good start with Simon Badger scoring 47, and a 66-run eighth-wicket stand between Simon Murley (25 not out) and Jesse Ruwhiu (32) offered hope.
But regular wickets robbed the Valley of any chance of victory.
Sam Wells and Bracewell took two wickets apiece for University.
