The Otago Cricket Association is a fortnight away from appointing a head coach.

Chief executive Ross Dykes had hoped to have the position filled by the end of the month but said the interviewing process had taken longer than expected.

''There have been a few things which have got in the way with trying to arrange interviews and get a panel together when the applicants have been available,'' Dykes said.

''It has not been easy but we've certainly progressed.''

The field has been reduced to five contenders.

Former coach Vaughn Johnson resigned in March after acknowledging he had made some poor financial decisions - decisions that Dykes described at the time as a serious breach of trust.

Assistant coach Nathan King stood in for the remainder of the season and told the Otago Daily Times he was keen to continue in the role. Otago country coach Andy Sainsbury also applied.
