On the face of it, Dawn Ibbotson and Ross Taylor do not appear to have much in common.

She is an elderly woman, who was born in Gore and has lived in Dunedin for most of her life.

Taylor is a young international cricketer, of Samoan stock, who went to Palmerston North Boys High School.

But both have a love of cricket, and this week they had the number 94 in common.

Taylor scored 94 in the first innings against Pakistan in the test match at the University Oval earlier this week.

And 94 is Mrs Ibbotson's age, though not for too much longer as she turns 95 next month.

To mark the coincidence, New Zealand Cricket asked Taylor to sign a miniature bat which he then gave to Mrs Ibbotson, who has been watching the game from the long room at the University Oval.

Mrs Ibbotson, whose late husband, Arthur, was a former president of New Zealand Cricket and patron of the Otago Cricket Association, said it was a great surprise to receive the bat from Taylor.

"He was very nice and batted very well. I've taken the bat home and it is now sits proudly on the living room wall," she said.

"I didn't think anything of it when he scored 94."

Mrs Ibbotson was enjoying the cricket greatly, and felt the game was delicately poised going into the final day.
