CDK retains club title — with week to spare

Twice the clubs — twice the titles.

Carisbrook-Dunedin and Kaikorai merged their top teams two years ago and it has worked out wonderfully well.

The Demon Dogs secured a draw against North East Valley at Tonga Park on Saturday to win the Bing Harris Shield for a second consecutive season.

Valley posted 236. Llew Johnson clouted 58 from 46 balls and Kaleb McKay top-scored with 60 at No 8.

Patrick Arnold has been brilliant for CDK all season and nabbed four for 45, while Xavier Chisholm (34), Jonty Fleck (34 not out) and captain Jeremy Smith (42) got their side through to 189 for six.

Smith told the Otago Daily Times they had worked out they only need a draw with a bonus point "to win with a week to go, so that was the aim".

"It is pretty cool [to win two in a row] considering they were more or less two completely different teams that won it back-to-back," he said, explaining there had been wholesale changes to the side this season.

Medium-pacer Arnold had been a key contributor.

He was the leading wicket-taker in the declaration competition with 17 scalps at an average of 10.65, and he nabbed 17 at 11.94 in the one-day competition.

"He has stepped up all season when we needed him to," Smith said.

"He hits that difficult and annoying length for a batsman that you don’t really want to go forward or back to."

Smith said Jack Pryde had been another star performer. He had made timely contributions with the bat in the middle of the order.

"He’s been a rock for us."

At Sunnyvale, Green Island beat Albion by eight wickets.

The Eagles had been tracking nicely at 88 for one. Opener Josh Tasman-Jones scored 61 and Taylor Cumberland supported him with 46.

But once that partnership was broken, the innings dissolved rapidly, and Albion was routed for 130.

Legspinner Jack Mockford ran through the lower order with five for 18.

Brad Kneebone anchored the chase with 78 and Jed Mockford made 46 not out.

Taieri thrashed University-Grange by 176 runs in the other game. Adam Jones (122 not out) and Beckham Wheeler-Greenall (109) put on 189 for the third wicket to guide their side to 284 for three declared.

University-Grange crumbled to be all out for 108 in reply. Marcus Frost took four for 22.
