The intensity picked up in the second quarter and the Magic pegged the deficit back by one, trailing 36-26 at halftime.
Foul trouble began to hurt the Magic and Ajax extended its lead to 48-32 in a low-scoring third quarter.
It pulled away again in the fourth to claim an important win.
Alongside Ruske's 21 points, Natalie Smith had 10 for Ajax and Danielle Frost had nine.
Natalie Visger top-scored for the Magic with 20 and Soraya Umaga-Jensen chipped in with 11.
In the early game, a big third quarter helped Varsity past the Andy Bay Falcons.
It won that quarter 30-15 and went on to win the game 78-63.
Varsity led 35-32 after a close first half. The teams were locked 17-17 at the first break.
Jeanie Pattison, Bronwyn Kjestrup and Rosie Davison were all big scorers in the third quarter as Varsity opened up a gap that the Falcons could not close.
They finished with 19, 18 and 13 points respectively.
The Falcons fought back to win the fourth quarter, but it was too much of a deficit to overcome.
Zoe Richards proved key for the Falcons, scoring 31 points, including 12 in the first quarter. Her twin sister, Brittany, added 10, and Alyssa Heller chipped in with eight.
