Review: Bluff or Bust

A bus named Bertha, a man called Allan who wants to be known as Rick and an elusive brolly.

What does this have to do with Bluff and oysters?

Nothing, in fact, but it doesn’t matter because the Bluff Drama Club’s production Bluff or Bust will take you on a toe-tapping, head-bobbing, slapstick ride.

Director April Fisher helms this tale of a group of a group of former Bluffies making their way from Auckland to the Bluff Oyster Festival.

The star of the show is a beautiful bus named "Bertha", whose horn was honked, lights were lit and "engine bay" regularly tinkered with for all the audience to see.

The cast sing odes to her based on 1980s hits, including Another One Rides the Bus.

Act one sets the tone for the production and introduces us to the eclectic characters who’ve been pulled together for the journey down south.

The momentum accelerates in the second act when "Bertha" and her motley passengers make it across Cook Strait and,

like moth to a flame, poor Rick — or is it Allan? — falls victim to the female passengers’ schemes.

This is a bumpy and fun ride.

Bluff or Bust runs until Saturday at the Bluff Town Hall.
