Motorists are urged to take care on the roads as bad weather begins to affect parts of the South.

Acting Sergeant Ricky Harding, of Alexandra, said while inquires were ongoing, conditions were likely to be a factor in a single vehicle crash this afternoon.

A car went off the road near Butchers Dam on State Highway 8, just south of the intersection with Conroys Rd about 1.15pm.

Neither of the car's two occupants were seriously hurt and were in the care of ambulance staff.

Acting Sgt Harding urged travellers to drive to the conditions.

Rain has been falling steadily around Alexandra over the past two days and there were pockets of surface flooding on roads.

Earlier in a statement, Southern District police warned drivers to obey road closure signs after heavy rain flooded roads and snow trapped cars.

High alpine passes in the Central Otago Lakes area have experienced heavy snowfall today.

This morning, police worked with the NZ Transport Agency/Waka Kotahi to help a number of vehicles trapped on the Lindis Pass (SH8) by heavy snow that closed the state highway.

It has since reopened, but caution was advised.

“We’re urging people not to put themselves at risk,” Senior Sergeant Blair Dalton said.

“Police have noticed multiple vehicles drive around road closure signs and attempting to continue their journey.

“It’s not worth the risk, so for the safety of yourself, your passengers, other motorists and emergency services, please follow and adhere to the road signage in place.”

Motorists should check NZTA’s Journey Planner at https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/ before travelling, police advised.
