Every day would be plastic free day if Wānaka Wastebusters had its way.

But July is the month when they will turn up the volume on the Plastic Free message.

Wastebusters is encouraging and supporting people to ditch plastic and single-use packaging for waste-free alternatives with a "Just one swap" campaign and competition.

There will be an online tips competition and in-person events to help people make changes to benefit the planet and wallets.

Wastebusters communication manager Ruth Blunt said even small changes could be significant.

"Choosing to use one of the town’s refill stations for your pantry staples isn’t just good for the planet, it can also save you money and allows you to take the amount you need and no more," she said.

Activities include a session on refill options on July 5 and a Plastic Free Drinks information session at the Wastebusters’ Reuse Shop on July 31, where people can learn more about Wānaka’s SUCfree movement, Wastebusters’ vision for the future, and make beeswax wrap, oat milk and scent jars.

Wastebusters Plastic Free July initiatives are supported by the Queenstown Lakes District Council Zero Waste District Programme.

Last year, 89 million people around the world took part.
