Estella Wallace has been selected for this year's At the World’s Edge (AWE) emerging composer mentorship and will receive five months of composition mentoring from the festival’s composer in residence, Eve de Castro-Robinson.

Ms Wallace, who also plays the clarinet, will be composing a chamber work for a premiere during the AWE 2024 chamber music festival in October.

Her new work will also feature in a tour of Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago schools, reaching about 2000 pupils.

Ms de Castro-Robinson said there was a strong group of applications and she was "impressed to see not only the quality of music, but also the high level of focus and commitment each student brought to their work in general".

Ms Wallace had "a clear musicality, but also the all-important fire in the belly and a deep connection to the land", Ms de Castro-Robinson said.

Ms Wallace is in her second year studying composition at the New Zealand School of Music Te Kōkī at Victoria University.

Originally from Christchurch, and of Kāi Tahu descent, she began writing music when she was 14 and has written for choirs, chamber groups and orchestras.

She won the 2022 New Zealand Choral Federation-Sounz Te Reo Māori Choral Composition Competition with her piece Ka Mate Te Reo I Te Reaka Kotahi.
