Woman badly hurt as car goes off the road

A woman has been seriously injured in a one-car crash on a rural road in The Catlins.

A police spokeswoman said reports of a crash in Dutton’s Rd, Owaka, were received about 2.15pm yesterday.

Owaka volunteer fire station Deputy Chief Fire Officer Kelly Chambers said the car had gone off the gravel road on the opposite side to the river. Firefighters assisted ambulance staff to get her out the back window of her station wagon on a backboard.

A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said an ambulance and a helicopter were sent and a patient with serious injuries was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.
