The Clutha District Council is warning people to stay off a road near Milton which will be closed for least a week due to fears of an imminent landslip.
Jules Witt, the council's group manager service delivery, said a crack about 4cm wide had been discovered that ran across Coal Gully Rd and an adjacent quarry.
The road has been closed as a precaution due to suspicions that a slip was starting to happen.
It was likely the recent heavy rains were a contributing factor, Mr Witt said.
Geotechnical engineers would be brought in to monitor the road over a week, and after that a determination would be made about its future status.
The closure was likely to have a minimal impact on the public, as it was a low-traffic thoroughfare which seemed to be mostly used by forestry workers, Mr Witt said.
