The Wanaka Golf Club's annual charity tournament may be about giving back to the local community, but for club members Mike and Barb Bayliss this weekend's event also doubles as a chance to secure themselves back-to-back bragging rights.

While Mr Bayliss will tee up alongside his Matukituki Ventures team-mates Richard Ewing, Les Nelson, and Bevan Wilson again, Mrs Bayliss will be relegated to a support role to her friends Suzanne Ewing, Helen Haimes, Judy Muir, and Jan Gibson, this year.

Mrs Bayliss is recovering from a recent cancer scare, but is involved with organising the charity golf weekend and "I'll certainly be out there supporting the team".

The Baylisses are one of many matrimonial partnerships taking part in the popular Hirequip Charity Golf Classic Tournament, from Friday.

Their respective team-mates, the Ewings, will also be competing to retain bragging rights this year, after the two partnerships combined to win the tournament last year.

Tournament convener Bill Hore said the annual charity fixture has raised more than $100,000 for community groups since its inception in 2003.

Proceeds this year would go to Wanaka St John to help with the purchase of a new 4WD ambulance, he said.

About 50 four-person teams have entered the event, whichwill open with an American foursome competition on Friday, followed by a two-ball ambrose on Saturday, and a best-ball foursome on Sunday.
