Plans for a purpose-built community house in Alexandra are another step closer to reality thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Otago Community Trust.

The money, from the trust's latest funding round, took fundraising for the $3 million Alexandra Community House to more than $2 million.

House trust chairwoman Bernie Lepper was "thrilled with the donation".

With further fundraising planned for the new year, it is hoped building work can begin on the multifunction centre as early as March.

The community house will provide a common facility for social services, education agencies and arts and craft groups in Central Otago.

The community trust grant goes with a $750,000 Lotteries Community Facilities grant, which was announced earlier this month, and a $1 million grant from the Central Lakes Trust earlier in the year.

The Milton community has also received a welcome boost from the community trust, with the Tokomairiro Early Learning Centre receiving $11,000.

A former rest-home has been bought and will be converted into an early learning centre over the summer, in time for term one next year.

The grant will assist with equipping the facility and will reduce a large and growing waiting list of children.

Centre assistant head teacher Joanne Mead said children from Milton had been on waiting lists for up to a year, with only two early childhood centres in the town.

"This new space will make a very big difference to the town's children," she said.

In total, 26 organisations throughout the region received donations totalling $366,000 from the trust this month.

This included $35,000 granted to the Otago Community Hospice for its palliative care programme, and $25,000 given to the Skeggs Foundation to support local coaches.

A particular focus on preserving the region's history was also evident.

The Historic Cemeteries Conservation Trust will use its $25,000 to publish a biography on influential architect Robert Lawson and a $20,000 grant will help restore the category I historic North Otago Club.
