Arrowtown Primary School's rippa rugby team has come back from the national tournament in Wellington as fourth placegetter this week.

After becoming Otago champion earlier this year, the year 5 and 6 side earned a place in its third national tournament in as many years.

Coach Paul Winders said he was proud of what the 10 team members had achieved.

''The kids were playing really, really well. I thought they were up for it. They can be pretty proud of themselves.''

The side beat Canterbury in the quarterfinals to earn a shot at the final, but was beaten by a fast Counties Manukau outfit in golden point extra time in the semifinals.

The school was ninth last year and second in 2011.

Mr Winders said the school's three years of success can be attributed to pupils' good attitudes.

''They are such an active sporty bunch; they love playing it.

''They're always asking when the next practice is. I never have to ask them to show up.''

Mr Winders said the school had done incredibly well to finish fourth among the 600 teams competing nationwide for entry to the tournament.
