An inflatable raft which users carry into remote areas in a backpack is Queenstown's latest offering for adventure seekers.
Packrafting has been launched by Expedition X. Director and head guide Arno Marten said the idea was to allow people to walk into areas with a guide, inflate their boat then paddle across a lake, stream or sound.
Mr Marten described the boats - which weigh no more than 2.5kg - used on the trips as one of the first products in modern packrafting, which originated in Alaska.
''Packrafts are an ingenious and innovative piece of outdoor gear.
''They're a light, inflatable wilderness boat that is stored in its own pack and can be carried in a hiking backpack.''
