Speed ‘may have’ led to crash

 - Two people were injured, one seriously, after a car hit a power pole on State Highway 1 near Clinton on Saturday.

The crash occurred at about 3pm between Waipahi and Wairuna, near the intersection with Whiteside Rd.

Sergeant Eric Browne, of Gore, said it appeared the vehicle failed to navigate a corner correctly.

"We have not yet determined what the cause was, but it looks like speed may have been a factor," he said.

Incidents like this caused ripple effects across communities, he said.

Police would continue to rigorously enforce speed limits.

"People around our area can expect to be stopped for any speed over the speed limit."

Remember the speed limit was 100kmh and not 101kmh, he said.

"Living in a rural area, it is very important to watch our speed.

"Even just a few kilometres over can make a big difference."

 - In the past month the number of retail crimes had reduced.

Police had worked with repeat offenders and seen changes in their behaviour, Sgt Browne said.

"That’s a good outcome for the community."

However, retail crime should continue to be reported to the non-urgent police line on 105, he said.

"The more we have reported the bigger picture, we have to come to better solutions."

 - Prevention was always better than dealing with a crime after it had occurred, he said.

"People are opportunistic, if they see an opening and they think they can get away with it, they will.

"The use of spotlights and cameras eliminated a lot of crime potential."
