Police trace speedster

A french man (26) living in Queenstown faces multiple charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed car chase through residential Fernhill streets early yesterday morning.

Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said the man was clocked travelling at excessive speeds in Lake Esplanade's 30kmh zone at 3.20am.

A passing patrol car spun around to try to stop the man, who was driving at speeds up to 90kmh on Fernhill Rd.

The patrol caught up with the man at the Heritage Hotel and followed him to Dart Pl, where he drove up a private driveway, got out of the car and ran away.

"Unfortunately, he eluded police," Sgt Watt said.

Police used immigration records to track the man down at his Dart Pl house.

He will appear in the Queenstown District Court on one count each of dangerous driving, failing to stop and unlawfully being on property.
