Frankton company Remarkables Physios has opened a branch of its physiotherapy studio at the Post Office Precinct in central Queenstown.

The new premises opened for business on Monday with one treatment room, but a further treatment room and a small gym were also planned.

The new branch will be providing physiotherapy, acupuncture, massages and joint manipulations, and take clients with or without prior bookings.

Business manager Simon Smith, who operates the company with his wife and company director Melissa Davidson, said Remarkables Physios had long considered opening a downtown branch.

"When we found the right opportunity, it all came about very quickly, as we took over the lease of the rooms just last week. I will be meeting a contractor this week to finalise our plans for the other rooms, but we will still have to wait for a resource consent," he said.

"We should be fully operational by October," he said.

"For the time being we will have our five physiotherapists working at both locations, but we might have to hire more staff after that."

He said the motivation for a second branch was to offer their clients "a more convenient location, within walking distance of all the downtown hotels".

Those using the service were an even mix of locals and visitors to the resort, he said.

With seven physiotherapy businesses operating in Queenstown, competition was fierce.

"The last year has been tough for all physiotherapists, as the number of people seeking treatment went down about 33% since ACC changed its rules.

"But it has not hit us quite as hard, partly due to our marketing and partly due to the fact we still provide the first treatment free for all ACC cases," Mr Smith said.

"There will always be a lot of work here, as Queenstown is a place where active people come to enjoy all the activities on offer."

The new branch is on the first floor above the old post office behind the Pig and Whistle pub.
