North Carolina-born cotton picker turned United States soldier turned world-touring bluesman Big Daddy Wilson plays from the heart in both Queenstown and Arrowtown this month.

Renowned for his warm baritone voice and natural flair for blues, folk, soul and gospel, Wilson announced a live R18 show in Dux de Lux on April 21, then a family-friendly show in New Orleans Hotel, Arrowtown on April 22.

"I met the blues in Germany, where I still live today," Wilson said in a statement.

"I've been writing poems and songs long before I started singing the blues. I didn't know what it was, but it was mixed in my blood; I was born with the blues. So I started Back to the Roots Acoustic Blues, just me and a guitar player."

Wilson will be accompanied on his national tour by Steve "Guitar" Gilles. The German-born musician formed five-piece band Carolina Blues Connection with Big Daddy and toured clubs and festivals in north Germany during the early 1990s.

After immigrating to New Zealand in 1996, Gilles was the founding member of the band Gecko and the new tour was described as a "very special reunion" between the two old friends."

Appearing in support for both Wakatipu gigs will be Dunedin trio Delgirl, which straddles roots, Pasifika, folk, country and pop.

Songwriters and harmonious singers Erin Morton, John Dodd and Lynn Vare play guitar, ukulele, banjo, trumpet and stand-up bass.

Delgirl won the Tui award for Folk Album of the Year in January 2009 for its debut independent album Two, Maybe Three, Days Ride.

Presale tickets for the Queenstown gig at 9pm cost $15 from Dux de Lux, or $20 at the door. Presales for the Arrowtown gig at 5pm cost $20 from New Orleans Hotel, or $25 at the door.
