A "highly intoxicated" 20-year-old Mexican man living in Queenstown was punched in the face a prank failed to impress a woman's partner.
Senior Constable Chris Blackford, of Queenstown, said the Mexican hid in the bushes near Queenstown Primary School on Wednesday at 1.15am and "thought it would be funny to jump out to scare a woman", and grab her.
"Unfortunately her boyfriend popped him on the nose for his troubles," Snr Const Blackford said.
Although the man had previously been warned about his behaviour while grossly intoxicated, police were not taking the matter any further.
• The glovebox of an unlocked vehicle parked in an open-sided garage on Woodbury Rise, Goldfield Heights, was reported to have been searched, but no items were missing.
Queenstown police received a report from a member of the public on Wednesday at 9.20pm.
• A 44-year-old Australian man riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle suffered a broken arm after he lost control on a right-hand bend and hit a barrier on the Crown Range on Wednesday at 10.35pm.
The man was taken by St John Queenstown ambulance to the Lakes District Hospital, then on to Southland Hospital for further treatment.
• A 20-year-old New Zealand man was arrested and charged with trespassing after he was ejected from a bar on Steamer Wharf on Thursday at 3.36am, then allegedly returned and knocked over plants.
The man is expected to appear in the Queenstown District Court on December 3.
