Adults may be charged

More charges may be laid against adults involved with a youth ring of burglaries which has targeted vacant holiday homes in Wanaka.

Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said a police investigation was continuing into a string of "historical offending" linked to the burglaries of 52 holiday homes in Wanaka.

So far, a 20-year-old Wanaka man has been charged with burglary, while a 19-year-old and 17-year-old have been charged with receiving stolen goods.

The trio were remanded on bail in the Queenstown District Court this week.

About 30 teenagers have been interviewed by police and 20 have admitted a role in the burglaries, which predominantly involved the theft of alcohol from vacant homes.

Snr Sgt Grindell said police could not reveal any details about offending which had been committed by youths aged under 17.

More adults, besides those already charged, may face charges in relation to the burglaries, he said.

He declined to comment on whether someone was in charge of co-ordinating the burglaries, or those teenagers who had admitted a part in offending.

"We certainly believe pressure has been put on these younger people here," Snr Sgt Grindell said.

Two police officers are working on the investigation.
