Despite already having a good base of snow and heavy snowfalls expected this week, Awakino Skifield, near Kurow, will open later than scheduled this year, because of damage sustained in floods earlier this week.
The volunteer-run skifield was supposed to open on June 29, but ski club treasurer Chris Tschepp said aerial reconnaissance had revealed extensive damage to the access road, there being several wash-outs and damaged fords.
Ski club secretary David Campbell said the club's new bulldozer would ''greatly'' aid repair work. The revised opening date would be announced next week.
