Mike Gray has been the "linchpin" of the Duntroon and District Development Association for decades.

The power behind the association on many levels, he has now formally stepped down.

Association secretary Karan Lawrence said this week that Mr Gray had been a key player in ensuring the group’s aims became a tangible reality.

That had included working on the Nicol’s Blacksmith Trust and Vanished World.

"For years he’s been either the chairman, secretary or treasurer — or sometimes all three," Mrs Lawrence said.

The association expressed its appreciation to Mr Gray for his tireless work during its annual meeting on Monday.

"Honestly, he’s done so much more," Mrs Lawrence said, noting Mr Gray’s involvement in helping

realise the Waitaki Geopark concept.

Virtually anything that had been done to enhance the area "had Mike Gray as the driving force".

"The word I use is indefatigable and the linchpin in the Duntroon area for many years."

Mrs Lawrence said Mr Gray was passionate but could then ensure ideas became a reality.

"It’s his energy: he’s methodical, organised and focused — and he’s encouraging. That’s what I like about Mike."
