Police in Waimate have released the name of a local man killed in a twin-motorcycle collision on Coalpit Rd at the weekend.
Daniel Charles Down (30) died after a head-on collision with another motorcycle, near State Highway 82, southwest of Waimate, between 9pm and 9.25pm on Sunday evening.
A second rider, a 23-year-old man, was flown to Timaru Hospital with what were thought to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Constable Paul Alden, from Waimate, said an investigation was ongoing and it was not known why the riders collided.
"Two males riding motocross bikes on a rural gravel road, and they have been gunning towards each other and they have collided. From what I gather they both work on the same farm and they were at a barbecue and have just both gone for a ride on their bikes."
However, although weather conditions had been dry and calm, it had been "getting a bit dark" at the time of the accident, Const Alden said.
