Playground opening next month

Lolly scrambles galore and a ''picnic in the park'' are planned to celebrate the official opening of the Friendly Bay children's playground at Oamaru Harbour next month.

After two years' work by the Waitaki District Council and ''hours and hours'' of volunteer time and donations, the Steampunk-themed playground would have an opening day involving the whole community on October 11, council corporates services group manager Carolyn Carter said.

It was hoped residents would put their own stamp on the venture, after a businessman and the Waitaki Rotary Club organised concrete paving around the playground.

''The way it's currently being funded is people are donating a square each for $200, and in regards to that there is something, a name or whatever you want, being stamped on it ...''
