Oamaru filming for the Netflix adaptation of the Californian saga East of Eden, based on John Steinbeck’s novel of the same name, wrapped up in the small hours of yesterday morning.

"Action" was first called last Sunday for the week-long filming, which followed weeks of pre-production planning and set construction within the Oamaru Whitestone Trust Victorian Precinct.

The adjoining Oamaru Steam and Rail Society railyard beside the Friendly Bay coastal reserve also had a starring role.

During the week, many locals and visitors strolled the filming area, standing for hours in the hope of a glimpse or photo of one of the stars in action, including lead actress Florence Pugh.

Filming is now scheduled to move on to the Maniototo in the next few days.

The Otago Daily Times understands an adobe village set will be filmed in the arid Central Otago landscape in the coming days.
