Police have arrested two people after an alleged assault of a resident on Kaik Rd just north of Oamaru.
A police spokeswoman said it was too early to release details of last night's assault.
One man will appear in the Oamaru District Court tomorrow on an assault with a weapon charge, Senior Constable Carl Pedersen said later.
A witness said she called police about 6.20pm after she heard a door slam and two men began to assault another man.
The woman, who did not want to be named, said during the incident some sort of liquid was poured on the man's fence.
The woman said one of the men had a crowbar.
She said one of the men "dropped'' the man to the ground before putting "the boot in''.
``I called 111. I've never seen those two guys before. Two to one is pretty cowardly.
``It's not a nice thing. It's a pretty tranquil area out here. We haven't had this before.''
A St John spokesman said a man aged in his 50s and was taken to Oamaru Hospital with moderate injuries.
Glenavy Volunteer Fire Brigade station officer Gareth Pearce said his crew put foam on the fence and hedge of a property to take care of a liquid he believed was petrol.
