Police have confirmed a goat was put down after it was tasered following a rampage through gardens in downtown Oamaru.
Police began to field calls early on Thursday morning about a goat on State Highway 1 near the intersections of Nen St and Exe St endangering traffic.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said police and animal control responded, but lost sight of the goat as it ran through properties, however, later that morning police received a call from an Oamaru woman who reported a large goat was bailed up in her garage by her dog.
A police officer arrived at the scene and tried to get the goat out, but he was charged at instead.
Sgt Woodbridge said the officer then decided to taser the goat so the animal could be subdued and removed.
A vet was called to the scene and it was decided the goat needed to be put down.
Sgt Woodbridge said the goat was now with Waitaki District Council's animal control unit who would investigate who owned the goat.
