Freezing worker seriously hurt

A man dragged by a train at a North Otago freezing works was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with seriously injuries yesterday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said it was called to the Alliance Group Pukeuri plant just after 3.15pm.

Police and St John also attended the scene.

Senior Constable Ross Lory, of Oamaru, said the man, confirmed by Alliance Group to be an employee at the Works Rd plant, was clipped by a ‘‘shunting train’’ before he fell under it and was dragged a short distance.

The nature of his injuries were not known.

The train was at the plant and not on the main line between Dunedin and Christchurch.

Fenz assisted at the scene while waiting for a helicopter to arrive to pick up the injured worker.

A helicopter landed at the site about 4pm and left about 4.30pm.

Alliance Group had launched an internal inquiry into the incident at its Pukeuri plant, a spokesman said.

‘‘Alliance will be supporting the employee’s family and speaking with WorkSafe New Zealand.

‘‘It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.''

Alliance Pukeuri staff members at the scene declined to comment.
