After work picking potatoes at an Oamaru market garden as a teenager, Tim Hurndell has  returned to his first love and turned it into a career.

Now based in Christchurch, Mr Hurndell (41) rides and sells motorbikes.

Riding was a choice his parents tried to warn him away from, but at the weekend he was giving many people their first or second experiences on motorbikes at Waimate’s March Hare Rally.

His parents’ fear of Mr Hurndell  injuring himself now made more sense since he had become a father, he said.

"It’ll be a little while before they get on two wheels ... you only want the best for them."

Mr Hurndell  works on making sure that keen or green motorcyclists are safe and enjoy their chosen mode of transport.

There was no  single reason he could give why people became bikers, Mr Hurndell said. It was "like asking why we breathe".

His best piece of advice for any new rider was to listen to people who rode well.

"You want to mould yourself into the best you can."
