It was believed to be the first house fire in 50 years in Duntroon.
Duntroon Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer David Eckhardt said although it was not known how the fire started, the age of the house meant that it went up "like a dry piece of wood".
Mr Eckhardt said fire engines from Duntroon and Kurow attended the blaze after an emergency call was received at 8pm. Crews left the scene at 3.30am.
About 80% of the house was destroyed, he said.
Residents of the house were yesterday being looked after by friends, he added.
Although the Duntroon Fire Brigade had attended house fires out of the village, he said Tuesday's fire was the first house fire in Duntroon for about 50 years.
"We just don't have house fires.
"We educate people very well here."
The house's occupiers could not be contacted yesterday.
