A Roxburgh East house was engulfed in flames by about 3.30pm and about an hour later the Alexandra Pie Cart was destroyed by fire.
Roxburgh Volunteer Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Fire Officer David Welsh said the house fire was caused by an unattended frypan. When the Roxburgh and Millers Flat brigades arrived, the fire was "well-involved".
A man in his early 50s was the only person home and escaped uninjured, but the house was "80% ruined", Mr Welsh said.
About the same time as the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade was putting out the Pie Cart fire, a fire broke out in the Tin Goose cafe, on the opposite side of Centennial Ave.
Alexandra Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Hutton said it was extinguished by the occupant and caused minor damage.
Alexandra brigade Senior Station Officer Glen Gray said the fires were a timely warning.
