
Senior Constable Graham Perkins said the checkpoint was on Centennial Ave and 200 drivers were breath-tested by police.
Only seven needed additional breath screening and none were over the legal limit of 250 micrograms.
"Out of 200 vehicles stopped, we only found alcohol present in seven people, which is a good result," he said.
An Alexandra man was lucky to have his phone returned to him after he lost it falling off his bike returning home from a night out drinking.
The phone was found by a police officer on a morning run around the Millennium Track on Saturday morning and taken to Alexandra Police Station, where the owner was identified.
The man had decided to take a shortcut through the park on his way home from a night out but fell off his bike on to a tree stump.
The man managed to locate his bike but could not find his phone in the dark, Snr Const Perkins said.
On Friday, Alexandra police confiscated their first piece of gang insignia since a new law banning its public display came into effect last month.
The man was noticed wearing a gang T-shirt during a traffic stop. He then admitted having an ounce of cannabis, 31 grams of cannabis plant, electronic scales, cash, two more gang shirts and a meth pipe in his vehicle. All items were seized and he faced charges of possession of cannabis for supply, disqualified driving third or subsequent offence, possession of drug utensils and possession of gang insignia.
A 52-year-old Alexandra man was charged with wounding with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault with a blunt instrument after allegedly seriously assaulting two people, in Alexandra, on December 4.
He was remanded in custody until March after appearing in the Queenstown District Court.
Snr Const Perkins said the man entered the Ashworth St address armed with a baseball bat and confronted another male when an argument broke out.
The victim was hit in the ribs and arms with the baseball bat while trying to defend himself.
Another occupant of the house was also hit before leaving on a bicycle.
After a tip-off notifying police of the man’s location, he was arrested without incident, Snr Const Perkins said.
