More than $60,000 is to be spent upgrading and constructing walkways and recreational tracks in the Cromwell basin.
The Clutha Management Committee yesterday resolved to approve an application for funding from Sport Central and Cromwell's promotion group.
Money will be used to upgrade existing tracks along the shore of Lake Dunstan, extend others, and develop a new track from Cromwell to Pisa Moorings.
Work will be divided into four projects and, if possible, predominantly be undertaken by people serving periodic detention to reduce labour costs.
A track from Old Cromwell Town to Bannockburn will be upgraded with timber steps in places and a boardwalk over sandy sections, at an estimated cost of $14,100, including labour.
From Old Cromwell Town to Lowburn, a walking and cycling trail will be upgraded, marker posts installed, and a bridge built over a storm-water inlet, costing an estimated $5995.
The most expensive project will be a $25,552 track to be constructed between Lowburn and the Pisa Moorings residential subdivision development, 5.4km long and of a standard that will allow the use of prams and buggies.
A partial track between the Bannockburn bridge and Stagger Inn car park in the Kawarau Gorge will also be completed to 3.5km, at an estimated cost of $16,652.
The committee had about $70,000 carried over from previous years' budgets, which it had not allocated to projects in the 2009-10 year.
It was resolved that money would be used to fund the track development, which should be completed by June next year.
