After 10 years at the helm of the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust, founding member Daphne Hull has stepped down as chairwoman.

Mrs Hull, of Alexandra, said she was not leaving the trust, just her leadership role as she thought it was time somebody else with "new visions and leadership" took over.

That person is Middlemarch woman of many hats Kate Wilson.

Mrs Wilson, a Dunedin City councillor, business owner-operator, lawyer and farmer, has been on the trust for about nine years.

Mrs Hull described her chairwoman's position as a full-time unpaid job, but a rewarding one.

In her time on the trust, she has seen the 150km trail between Clyde and Middlemarch grow from nothing to an internationally recognised tourist attraction that has revitalised many small Central Otago towns and significantly boosted the local economy.

Now that the trail was well established, the trust's direction had changed to focus more on promotion and to retain the trail's position as a key tourism product, she said.

Mrs Wilson said the next step would be working more with the community and getting Rail Trail operators to integrate more with the community.
