They were judged in Gimmerburn yesterday on weight, colour, crimp, formation and any faults they might have had.
Organising committee chairwoman Margot Hall said 43 growers from around the country entered 150 top-quality fleeces - including fine wool and strong wool - in 40 different classes.
The calibre of all fleeces was "extremely high" and it was a tough competition.
The fleeces will be displayed and the winners announced on Friday at the Maniototo Stadium.
Mrs Hall said the event would begin at 1.30pm with a shearing demonstration. There would be speeches around 4pm and then the awards would be given.
There would also be five fashion retailers with displays of woollen goods and a children's competition.
Primary schoolchildren have created paintings with wool, designed hats, or recycled woollen clothing in a competition for cash prizes.
