Roxburgh police say motorists speeding through the town over Labour Weekend had created "extremely dangerous" conditions for pedestrians.
Constable Craig Bennett said a "large number" of tickets had been issued and described the average speed of motorists as "atrocious".
"Most people were travelling between 64kmh and 79kmh, in what is a 50kmh speed limit area. A lot of pedestrians and shoppers were around and it was extremely dangerous," he said.
