Reliving the glory days

For the men of the 1952 White Horse Cup-winning Matakanui rugby team, their yearly get together was sparked by a night out at the pub and the promise of a free meal if they returned.

After their 9-3 win (or 6-3 depending on whom you speak to) over Patearoa, the men went out for a night of celebrations.

By noon the next day, they had made it to the Chatto Creek pub.

The then publican, also their team manager, promised them a free meal if they returned in a year.

For the past 60 years, they have been meeting at the pub at noon and, although their numbers are dwindling, widows of some of their former-team mates join them to reminisce.

Once there were 23 of them, now there are only seven.

Although their rugby playing days may be far behind them, they remember their win well.

"I was marking an Otago winger and all the instructions I was given was to make sure he didn't score. He didn't score," Leo Devery, of Invercargill said.

He was 18 at the time and was a "ring in" for the team.

The ages of the surviving team-mates range from 78 to 85.
