Police praise bar staff after incident

Police are praising door staff at an Alexandra pub who kept members of the public safe during an incident in which a police officer was injured.

A 28-year-old Hastings man was arrested after police were called to assist door staff at an Alexandra bar early on Saturday morning.

An officer sustained a broken rib and a sprained ankle while arresting the man.

No update on the condition of the officer was available yesterday.

The Otago Daily Times understands the incident happened at Shooters Bar, in Tarbert St.

No-one from the bar could be contacted for comment yesterday.

Police were called after the intoxicated man allegedly became upset and abusive towards door staff who had refused to let him enter the bar.

After police arrived the man continued his behaviour and was arrested, but refused to comply and allegedly assaulted one of the officers.

The man appeared in the Queenstown District Court on Saturday and was remanded to reappear in the Alexandra District Court later this month.

He was charged with assaulting a police officer and disorderly behaviour.

Central Otago sub-area supervisor Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk praised the efforts of door staff who kept members of the public back and safe while the man was restrained.

``We had a large, intoxicated, extremely agitated man, whose behaviour put both himself and public nearby at risk,'' he said.

Incidents of this nature were rare in Central Otago, Snr Sgt Kerrisk said.

``We have low crime and in our communities people are safe and feel safe, he said.

``Incidents of this nature are, thankfully, not common, as behaviour of this type is simply not tolerated in our community.''
