A private district plan change has been sought to address peak-time car parking woes at New World supermarket in Alexandra.
The Central Otago District Council has received a request for a plan change from Foodstuffs South Island Ltd, aimed at creating an additional 20 parks. It has asked the council to rezone 719sq m of land on Kenmare St, beside the car park, from residential to business resource area.
Council planning and environment manager Louise van der Voort said in a report to the council the aim of the plan change was to cater for "increased patronage and parking demand during peak periods".
The land covered two sections. A single-storey house was on each section.
The council has accepted the request and the change will be publicly notified so people can make submissions.
Access to the area would continue to be through the existing Centennial Ave and Moa St entrances.
