An Oamaru stone house just north of Cromwell, with views towards the Pisa Range, has been declared the country's top new home in the $250,000 to $350,000 section in national building awards.

Judges praised the house design, by Brian Archer, of Cromwell-based firm Alpine Homes Ltd,The builder had "expertly laid Oamaru stone and employed attractive cedar boards to give the home a sense of luxury," judges said.

The property, at a Pisa North subdivision, was adjudged the top new home in the $250,000 to $350,000 section in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards.

The awards, in association with PlaceMakers, were announced at an ceremony in Auckland on Friday night.

Mr Archer could not be contacted yesterday.

Judges said the builder had "maximised the natural resources to bring out the best in the site as well as insulating the house to ensure it can stand up to the harsh and fluctuating climate of Central Otago."

This was "an attractive, special home", which showed a "sophisticated use of materials" rarely seen in homes in this price range, they said.

The property, with an attached double garage, had three double bedrooms, an office and an interior colour scheme which included soft greys and paprika.

The roof was charcoal coloured.

After spending several years in a motor bus, the owners were delighted with their new home, with the kitchen and all living areas looking out towards the Pisa Range, organisers said.
