While councils around the South are forming partnerships to manage their water systems, two have gone a step further and are sharing staff members.

Central Otago District Council group manager planning and infrastructure Louise van der Voort is almost at the end of a five-month secondment to the Waitaki District Council.

Central Otago council chief executive Peter Kelly said Ms van der Voort would return to her role in Alexandra next month.

The Waitaki District Council was repaying the Central Otago council for all costs associated with the five-month secondment.

During Ms van der Voort’s absence Lee Webster was appointed as the acting group manager planning and infrastructure, he said.

Central Otago District Council governance officer Wayne McEnteer was helping the Oamaru-based council.

He was "providing democratic governance advice to Waitaki District Council’s new governance team as required," Mr Kelly said.

Mr McEnteer would attend the next Waitaki meeting in person and would offer support online if needed, he said.

Having staff seconded to other councils was not new, but it had been at least six years since it had happened.

The council would continue to consider the option in the future.

"The two councils are likely to be working closer together and with the Local Water Done Well proposition to form a regional CCO is an obvious example where there could be a sharing of staff effort," Mr Kelly said.
