A new voice is controlling the airwaves throughout the Maniototo from today, as Burn 729am says goodbye to its long-time station manager Amie Pont.

But Mrs Pont is keeping it in the family, handing over the managerial reins to Melissa Inder, a cousin by marriage.

Mrs Pont (30) started volunteer work at the small town community radio station five years ago with the intention of staying in Ranfurly temporarily.

The Maniototo ingrained itself in her life, however, and she can no longer imagine leaving it.

She is planning to start her own business but will keep working for the community.

"After my husband, Jeff, and I made the decision to remain in the Maniototo permanently, things have just roller-coasted.

"I'm using my marketing management degree to start a home-based business including consulting, web design, event co-ordination, and the occasional compere gig."

Mrs Pont said she would remain with Burn 729am as chairwoman of the radio charity and help out with announcing if needed.

Mrs Inder has worked as an announcer for more than a year.

"I started because Amie was desperate for announcers at the time, and now I am going to have to be asking her to help out occasionally."

Mrs Inder (29) said the radio's content would not change straight away.

"It will be business as usual for a while. I was born and bred in the Maniototo and this is my way of putting back into the community."
